Lil Pickle- 2985 Fairview Rd Costa Mesa, CA 92626 (714) 979-5522
Just before leaving town last weekend, I happened to be in the right place at the right time to try a local favorite sandwich shop, Lil Pickle. It is located in a small strip mall at the corner of Fairview and Baker in Costa Mesa, CA. Let me sum it up by telling you, this is a small place with BIG taste!
When you walk in, the interior is similar to an ol' time deli -lots of wood-and the walls are darned with decade pictures of various sports teams they have sponsored throughout the years. The deli case is 50 years old, at best, and I think the menu was created about the same time. I don't think anything has changed since the doors first opened (nor do I think it needs to).
I got the sandwich Lil Pickle is famous for, "The Lil Pickle Special". My daughter got a turkey and cheese sandwich and my two sons got Jr. Ham and cheese sandwiches.
I was delighted by the first bite as I chomped down on that soft, fresh roll. I was concerned when I ordered the meals originally that the rolls would be hard because I watched the sandwich makers cut into the bread and it seemed a bit stiff. Happily, thas was not the case at all. In fact, I still don't know what kind of bread they used but it's soft, chewy texture has made a believer out of me, for sure!
The sandwiches had plenty of meat and cheese. The lettuce and tomatos were fresh and tasty. The Italian dressing was tangy and not too oily. Everyone enjoyed their sandwiches, including my 5 year old who is a closet "vegetarian".
The only drawback to my visit to Lil Pickle is that they don't take credit or debit cards. They have an ATM machine in the restaurant which you're welcome to use for an exorbitant fee and normally, this is a major turn off for me. The food was so good, however, that this pet peeve will not keep me from frequenting this place often. I just have to remember to keep a stash of "Lil Pickle cash" ever ready.
